The ancient sites of Aihole , Pattadakal, and Badami, are situated very close to each other in a triangle, and sandwiched between Hindu Hampi to the South and Muslim Bijapur to the North, historical enemies, and pre-dating them both by several centuries. It is here we find some of the earliest Hindu architecture and the foundation of the achievements that followed. The early Chalukyas became powerful in the 4-8th c. Aihole, the first capital was the earliest, then Badami flourished in 543-757 AD. Pattadakal, while being the second capital, became a coronation city and religious center from 7-9th c. They are a sort of crucible of Indian architectural styles, and seem to have been a venue of experimentation. It is from here that temple styles migrated and developed in markedly different ways to the North, East, and South.
