The Imperial City: Delhi
Since the 12th-century, Delhi has been the capitol city successively to Princes,
Maharajas, Sultans, English Viceroys and contemporary parliamentary government.
It is the perfect introduction to India, blending the ancient and modern, the
peaceful and frenetic, and the disturbing and beautiful. Delhi is built within
the magnificent remains of centuries of empires, indigenous and foreign. Delhi
is made up of about fifteen cities, spanning the period from the 11th to the
20th centuries. It is also the ancient city of Indraprashta, the site
over 4,000 years ago of the Mahabharata. There is little left of the
early cities; they litter the plains, some still living, some deserted ruins.
This luxury of space, unknown to any other historic capital, continues to be
explored for housing and industry. Old Delhi (Shahjahanabad) and New
Delhi, the heart of modern Delhi; the two most recent cities are relatively
intact.
